AhlulBayt News Agency: A three-day international conference on the theme “Qur’an and Science” was organized from 28 January to 30 January 2026 through the joint collaboration of the Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, Wilayat Foundation, and Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran.
The inaugural session of the conference was held at Dr. M. A. Ansari Auditorium in the presence of scholars from across the world. The conference was formally inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Professor Mazhar Asif, and Professor Mohammad Mehtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, Jamia Millia Islamia.
Presiding over the inaugural session of the third international three-day conference, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif stated that the true welfare of humankind lies in understanding the Qur’an, reflecting deeply upon it, and acting upon its teachings. He remarked that it is tragic that the Qur’an—which once served as a revolutionary force for living nations, shaped moral character, and acted as a shield against sin—has today been reduced merely to a book recited for the benefit of the deceased.
He emphasized that the need of the hour is to read the Qur’an with understanding and contemplation, to once again make it a model for life, embed it in our hearts, translate its teachings into our character, and recognize it as the soul of both individual and collective life. He further added that the true spirit of religion lies in ensuring that one human being does not harm another through speech, conduct, or actions.
The chief guest of the program, Professor Rizvi, Registrar, Jamia Millia Islamia, stated in his address that numerous verses of the Qur’an draw human attention toward various scientific realities, such as the creation of water, the expansion of the universe, the creation of humans from clay, the systems sustaining paradise, and the barrier between two bodies of water preventing them from mixing. These signs, he said, clearly establish that the Qur’an is not merely a book of guidance but also directs humankind toward scientific principles that govern the universe.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Aslam Parvez, former Vice-Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, stated that the Qur’an and Sunnah teach us that love is not merely a matter of words or claims, but a reality manifested through action.
He further said that the Qur’an presents the principle that surplus wealth should be spent in the path of goodness so that humanity may benefit and social balance may be maintained.
The Conference Director, Head of the Department of Islamic Studies, and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia, Professor Iqtidar Mohammad Khan, stated that the Qur’an invites humanity to observe, reflect upon, and deeply contemplate the wisdom and insight embedded in the signs scattered throughout the universe, in order to improve both intellectual and practical life.
Professor Akhtarul Wasey remarked that in reality, both the Qur’an and science guide humanity toward the same ultimate source of truth. The difference, he explained, is that the Qur’an provides guiding principles, while science offers the means to understand, explain, and interpret those principles.
Former Head of the Department of Islamic Studies, Professor Syed Shahid Ali, while delivering the welcome address, stated that from the earliest period of Islamic civilization, the Qur’an has consistently emphasized observation of the universe, reflection, reasoning, and deep contemplation.
He pointed out that the very first revelation instructs human beings to read in the name of their Lord, indicating that the acquisition of knowledge is not merely a worldly necessity but a sacred act and a form of worship.
Distinguished guest Professor Dr. Jamileh Alamolhoda (former First Lady of Iran) emphasized in her address that it is essential for young people to strengthen their relationship with the Qur’an, as it is the only means that ensures intellectual security and paves the way for practical success.
The Iranian Ambassador to India, Dr. Mohammad Fattahi, stated that it is extremely important to read the Qur’an with an understanding of its meanings and messages, as many verses clearly guide humanity toward reflection, observation, and access to its profound wisdom.
Representative of the Supreme Leader of Iran in India, Professor Abdul Majid Hakim Elahi, remarked that the complex scientific and social challenges of the modern era have made us realize that the purpose of the Qur’an is to awaken human intellect and consciousness and bring humankind closer to the hidden wisdom underlying the creation of the universe.
Engineer Mustafa Abbas (Kuwait) stated that the Qur’an continuously urges the human mind and heart to remain engaged in reflection, observation, and contemplation so that the mysteries of the universe may be understood and explained on solid foundations.
Secretary General of Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Hind, Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Naqvi emphasized that science should not be made subordinate to the Qur’an; rather, science should be understood in the light of the Qur’an, as this alone leads to a sound and balanced scholarly approach.
The program began with the recitation of the Qur’an by Dr. Mohammad Munawwar Kamal. Mr. Junaid Haris, Associate Professor, Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Dr. Mehdi Baqar conducted the proceedings of the program.
Faculty members of the Department of Islamic Studies, heads of various departments, faculty members, and guests, along with a large number of research scholars and students from India and abroad, participated in the conference.
